BAL-TAP "S"

Thread Specification

Machine Screw Unified Inch Screw Threads (UNC and UNF) from #000 thru #12.

Fractional Unified Inch Screw Threads (UNC and UNF) from ¼” thru 1.0”.

Metric Metric Screw Threads (M) from M0.7 thru M18.

Pipe Straight and Tapered Pipe Threads (NPS, NPSC, NPSM, NPSF, NPT, and NPTF) from 1/16” thru ¾”.

Thread Size

Machine Screw Threads are identified by the major diameter, followed by the threads per inch. The major diameter on the machine screw threads are .013” larger than then previous, starting at #000 which is .034”. (#00 is .047, #0 is .060”, #1 is .073”…….#12 is .216”) For example, a #6-32 has a major diameter of a .138” and 32 threads per inch.

Fractional Threads are identified by the major diameter, followed by the threads per inch. For example, a ¼-20 has a major diameter of a .250” and 20 threads per inch.

Metric Threads are identified by the major diameter, followed by the pitch. For example, a M6 x 1 has a major diameter of a 6mm and 1.0mm in-between threads.

Pipe Threads are identified by the nominal pipe size, followed by the threads per inch. For example, a 1/8-27 has a 1/8” nominal pipe size and 27 threads per inch.

H Size

The “H” or “D” limit specifies the actual size of the tap pitch diameter. Every “H” or “D” limit is a .0005 inch increase in the tap size starting at the basic pitch diameter which is also the GO Gage dimension. For example, an H5 tap is plus .0025 inches larger than the GO gage.

When choosing the “H” limit for a tap, first you need to determine the class of fit. For Unified Inch Screw Threads the most common classes of fit are 2B and 3B. For Metric Threads the most common classes of fit are 4H, 6H, and 6G.

Form taps and cutting taps require different “H” limits. Cutting taps are aggressive and cut larger than the tap. When a form tap is used, material springs back requiring a larger “H” limit to begin with.

Plating, and heat treating also have an effect on the finished size of the threads and usually require a higher “H” limit when tapping.
